Quotable

“We are already faster than most of our competitors due to our decision over three years ago to shut down our ecommerce fulfillment center and deliver all digital orders out of our stores. Not only did this concept of localized fulfillment mean we now have only one cost structure to leverage…we can now get product into customers’ hands faster by reducing the order processing time, cutting down the shipping distance to the customer and also offering in-store pick-up.”

Numbers In Play

Retail
Against the backdrop of looming tariffs, slower monthly job growth and a possible interest rate cut by the Federal Reserve next month, the segment lost nearly 7 percent for the week with the two British entrants—Sports Direct and JD Fashion—the biggest decliners. Sports Direct was reportedly set to increase its stake in Game Digital, a U.K. gaming retailer, by 40 percent. Walmart has added a “fast lane” in its Canadian doors that enables customers to skip cashiers and registers at checkout by using the retailer’s mobile app. Feature may be added to future WMT stores. Zumiez realized a category shift in Q1 with footwear and hardgoods leading comparable sales trends and men’s and women’s apparel showing softer results. Kohl’s will begin accepting Amazon returns in its stores next month, likely hoping to spark traffic ahead of the Back-To-School season.
Brands
Segment trails the Dow over the period despite rising nearly 2.3 percent with 12 stocks up and three down. The Dow gained more than 674 points, or 2.69 percent.
