Google Buying Fitbit for $2.1 Billion

Google is paying a 31 percent premium on Fitbit’s market capitalization to acquire the 12-year old maker of fitness trackers and smartwatches. The transaction, suspected for days, is expected to close in 2020. “We see an opportunity to invest even more in Wear OS, as well as introduce Made by Google wearable devices into the market,” commented Rick Osterloh, SVP of devices and services for Google. Gildan Exits Mexico; Champion Keeps Rolling for Hanesbrands

Citing weak sales in the imprintables channel in North America and internationally, Gildan Activewear reported a 2 percent decline in Q3 revenues to $740 million. A 1.1 percent increase in overall activewear sales to $619.2 million was driven by double-digit growth in sales to global lifestyle brand and higher fleece and fashion basic sales in North America. On the brink of the crucial two-month holiday season, wild week-to-week swings continue for the segment. Following a 10 percent gain and a nearly 12 percent drop the last two weeks, segment rebounds with a more than 12.5 percent increase. Much of it can be credited to currency effect from the two U.K. entrants, JD Fashion and Sports Direct, which each posted double-digit increases. In total, five stocks rose and 10 declined. Big 5 Sporting Goods, which reported a 0.3 comparable sales increase on a low-single digit comp gain in apparel and slightly lower comps in footwear, was the largest percentage gainer. Hibbett/City Gear has is teaming with Shipt to offer its customers same-day delivery service on purchases in several Southern markets, including Atlanta, Charlotte and Birmingham. Kohl’s 64-page circular of ‘Black Friday’ deals (Nov. 28-Dec. 2) includes up to 30 percent off select Nike, up to 40 percent off select Adidas and up to 35 percent off select Under Armour footwear and apparel. Foot Locker opened a Michael Jordan-inspired food pop-up, Rivals Café, inside its flagship Los Angeles store last week offering specialty hot dogs and French Dip sandwiches. Genesco hires Brent Baxter, a former Sally Beauty and Stein Mart senior executive, as VP/Chief Accounting Officer, and names COO Mimi Vaughn as CEO and president, effective Feb. 2, 2020. Robert Dennis moves to executive chairman of the Nashville parent of Journeys.
Brands
Segment drops more than 1.4 percent for period after more than 1.6 percent decline the prior week. Dow’s nearly 1 percent increase for the period is better than the segment, which saw only four gainers and 11 decliners. Acushnet, which generated a 6 percent increase in U.S. sales in Q3 and 13 percent overall, is currently projecting unmitigated List 4 tariff impacts of $7-10 million in 2020. GOLF management is currently examining strategic pricing initiatives. Columbia Sportswear saw its Columbia and Sorel brands post double-digit growth in Q3, paced by North America. U.S. sales were 17 percent higher and Q3 and are up 15 percent year-to-date. Wholesale growth in the “low 20s” was driven by higher advance orders and earlier shipments of Fall 2019 products. Callaway’s U.S. sales were 13.6 percent higher in Q3 at more than $161.6 million. ELY’s golf equipment sales are up 5 percent year-to-date in constant currency. Company recently launched its Epic Forged Iron and MD5 Haw Wedge. The Jack Wolfskin brand, which contributed $134 million in Q3 sales, will be launched in North America between Q1/20 and Q2/20. Yeti, which experienced 17 percent revenue growth in Q3 (+9% wholesale, +31% DTC), has a new global media agency. Company is introducing a pinnacle hard cooler in Q4 that it says, “pushes the edges of innovation, design and performance.”
