Retail-Supplier Leverage Hits New Height; With Walmart As Prime Example

Walmart’s new supplier program—designed to guarantee in-stocks but also prevent overflowing backrooms caused by vendors shipping orders early to improve their respective top lines—could be a sign of things to come in the changing retail landscape.  WMT’s new program, which commences next month, was designed to improve the discount behemoth’s efficiency and add $1 billion in annual revenues through better product in-stocks. For nearly six months, Walmart has been working closely with its top vendors to improve on-time and in- full (OTF) delivery rates to 95 percent, up from a prior target of 90 percent. Read more...

Another split week for the segment with six up and eight down with the aggregate off 1 percent for the period. Dick’s is not yet benefitting from the Sports Authority bankruptcy. DKS shares are off approximately 40 percent since the one-time rival went under. One analyst says the retailer needs more drop-in traffic at its stores. Foot Locker, meanwhile, is being hurt by the reports that Nike and Under Armour will sell more products directly to consumers. Sportsman’s Warehouse realized a 3.9 percent decline in short interest with two-thirds of analysts who follow the stock listed as positive. Cabela’s shareholders have approved the retailer’s combination with Bass Pro Shops. Deal expected to close in the third quarter.
Brands
Five up and nine down for the period, but two (Skechers and VF Corp.) were essentially flat for the week with declines of less than 1 percent. Adidas opens an Originals store in Los Angeles and gets Lonzo Ball to don a new Harden shoe for NBA Summer League game. Amer Sports’ Precor fitness brand failed last month to get a judge to scrap a federal class action complaint over alleged inaccurate heart rate sensors in nine of its treadmills. Fitbit too is hit with the legal bug, a patent infringement lawsuit in the U.S. and China over “haptic feedback use.” Plaintiff Immersion says it tried to negotiate technology licenses with the wearable giant. GoPro, meanwhile, launches a pilot program for its 360 Camera Fusion with spherical camera with the likes of Fox Sports, the NBA’s Golden State Warriors and Getty Images. The product will be released to mainstream consumers later this year.
