Numbers In Play
The Sports Insight Index is our opinion of what we think are the 30 most important public companies in the industry, 15 vendors and 15 retailers. Space considerations prevent us from tracking more, but we will make changes over time.
Retail
It was nearly a perfect week for the segment as it rose more than 9.7 percent in aggregate to take its Index score into the 70s. One of the two U.K. entrants who paced the gainers, Sports Direct, wants a European investigation into the power of Nike and Adidas following reports that the Swoosh has notified European retailers that their days as a wholesaler are numbered. Dick’s, which was essentially flat for the period, was a participant in the “first scheduled, e-commerce delivery via drone delivery trial in the U.S.” Friday in a Virginia drone delivery by FedEx/Wing Aviation. Separately, DKS CEO Ed Stack told Business Insider he doesn’t believe Sen. Majority Leader Mitch McConnell  (R-KY) has the guts to address gun reform, including passage of HR8 that would require background checks for all firearms sales. The bill, passed by the House in February, has been sitting on McConnell’s desk since. Macy’s shares are downgraded to underperform by Credit Suisse, citing weakening performance and likely Q3 same store sales that didn’t meet expectations. Sportsman’s Warehouse opened eight new stores on Oct. 19, introducing its banner to consumers in New York and Pennsylvania with openings in Elmira and Rochester, NY and Altoona, Camp Hill and Washington, PA following its acquisition of Field & Stream doors from Dick’s. Foot Locker’s foundation will award $20,000 to 20 young leaders. Application close on Jan. 3. Genesco hires former Nissan executive Scott E. Becker as SVP/general counsel to replace the retired Roger Sisson.
Brands
Segment rises more than 3.9 percent for the period, exceeding the Dow’s 1.24 percent for the week, to hit the 190 mark as all are positive with the exception of Puma. Nonetheless, The Cat debuts on Forbes 2019 List of the World’s Most Valuable Sports Brands at no. 6 behind Nike, ESPN, Adidas, Gatorade and Sky Sports. Separately, Adidas shares are downgraded to “neutral” from “overweight” by Piper Jaffray. Under Armour, which is seventh on the list ahead of Reebok at 10th, revealed the first look at footwear and apparel it’s developing for Virgin Galactic, which could begin space tourism flights sometime in 2020. Adidas is teaming with London start-up Stuffsr on a new U.K. loyalty program that will allow members to return any items purchased from the brand over the last five years to either be resold or recycled with member receiving a voucher. Business of Fashion says the idea will be expanded to other select markets in 2020, but no word if the U.S. will be one of them. Lululemon, which is investigating claims that workers at a Bangladesh factory that produces its garments are being abused, sees its shares rise to an all-time high. Wolverine Worldwide hires its first-ever Chief Merchant Officer (See the SIX podcast). VF Corp. reports Q2 results on Oct. 25. Skechers calls Nike “a bully” in a New York Times ad that alleges folks at the Swoosh are calling retailers to tell them Skechers is selling products that infringe on Nike design patents.
