It was a wild week for the Dow, which closed down 3 percent, or 830 points for the week and more than 800 points over two days as the impeachment inquiry debate heated up in Washington. Segment climbed more than 10 percent, but increase was largely due to currency exchange fluctuation by Sports Direct and JD Fashion, which each rose double-digits. Overall, eight stocks rose and seven fell. Kohls CEO Michelle Gass told conference attendees recently that 80 percent of consumers who bring an Amazon return into one of their stores, stay and shop for apparel. Macy’s is closing its downtown Seattle store in Feb. 2020 and selling the building. Dick’s is opening seven stores this month, including a combination Dick’s/Golf Galaxy location in Dallas on Oct. 26. Foot Locker, in conjunction with Adidas and Marvel, released two SPEEDFACTORY models over the weekend ahead of New York Comic Con to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the comic book giant. In Q3, the segment rose nearly 12 percent in the aggregate despite double-digit drops by Camping World, listed as a possible Chap. 11 bankruptcy candidate last week by one website, and Macy’s. Conversely, the prices of eight stocks rose double-digits on a percentage basis for the three months ended Sep. 30 with Hibbett Sports and Zumiez the biggest gainers.
Brands
Segment was flat in Q3 with Deckers, Under Armour and Nautilus (replaced by Peloton in this week’s INDEX) each posting double-digit percentage declines for the three months. On the plus side, Callaway, Nike, Puma and Skechers were each up double-digits in Q3. Speaking of Skechers, Nike has filed a patent infringement suit against its rival, alleging the Los Angeles company engages in a copying strategy urged by CEO Robert Y. Greenberg. At the heart of the case—a dozen patents and two specific Swoosh styles—the VaporMax and the Air Max 270. Nike was embroiled in another imbroglio last week as reports surfaced that CEO Mark Park was briefed on experiments to manipulate the use of performance-enhancing drugs for track & field athletes by banned brand endorser and running coach Alberto Salazar. Puma, meanwhile, according to the Business of Fashion, has teamed up with Amazon on a new athleisure label, Care Of, that will begin U.S. distribution for men and women next month after initially launching across Europe. Puma is designing the collection; Amazon is responsible for all marketing and distribution. GoPro lowered its annual revenue forecast to 6-9 percent growth from an earlier estimate of 9-12 percent due to production delays on its new Hero8 Black camera. Peloton (which replaces Nautilus this week) shares were down 15 percent, just two trading days after its Sep. 26 IPO. The movement left some experts suggesting the stock was being lumped in with other disappointing 2019 IPOs. Please note, the INDEX baseline of 100 based on closing share prices on Dec. 31, 2014 was changed by removing Nautilus and adding in PTON’s IPO opening price as if the stock was trading on that date.
