Retail
Essentially flat for the period, segment performed better than the Dow that declined 1.5 percent. Only four stocks — Sports Direct, JD Fashion, Hibbett and Walmart — were up for the week. Foot Locker was the biggest decliner, dipping nearly 23 percent, or more than $12 a share. Early last week, Bank of America’s Robbie Ohmes said he was cautious on FL and HIBB and Nike and Adidas on the brand side due to slower year-over-year web traffic for footwear. Tilly’s is moving forward with plans to open 13 doors this year, including 11 in H2 (See story). Dick’s says it remains on track to eliminate $30 million worth of expenses this year. As average ticket rose 1 percent in Q1, transactions fell 1 percent. But DKS’ ecommerce business increased 15 percent (See story). Walmart is contemplating expansion for its JetBlack personal shopping service powered by AI that is currently available by invite-only in New York City, according to Business Insider. Genesco realized a consolidated comparable sales increase of 5 percent, the eighth consecutive period for its footwear business. Camping World CEO Marcus Lemonis visited Statesville, NC last week where there a local controversy over the Gander RV’s 40 by 80 foot American flag. Lemonis vows to go to jail rather than take it down per city ordinance.
Brands
Under Armour releases a short documentary, “Margin of Victory,” to promote its new Rush performance fabric apparel line. Film features brand endorsers, including the NBA’s Steph Curry. Nike rolls out a Women’s World Cup ad ahead of the tournament and will debut a new premium-edition of its Air Max 1 for the annual Puerto Rico Day on June 9. Puma recently signed the 2019 WNBA Draft’s number one pick Jackie Young and fourth selection Katie Lou Samuelson to multi-year endorsement contracts, a further sign that The Cat is vested in basketball. Puma is also prepping a Cloud9 collection of apparel and footwear for a September debut. Cloud 9 is an esports organization. Callaway signs Harold Varner III to an equipment deal and is utilizing a supercomputer with AI to develop and design new clubs, according to Golf.com. Adidas will be out with a new UltraBOOST training shoe to coincide with the release of Disney’s Toy Story 4 on June 21 with a kids’ version coming July 11.
