Numbers In Play
The Sports Insight Index is our opinion of what we think are the 30 most important public companies in the industry, 15 vendors and 15 retailers. Space considerations prevent us from tracking more, but we will make changes over time.
Retail
Segment posts its strongest weekly gain of 2019, up more than 7.6 percent in aggregate, thanks largely to JD Sports Fashion’s 16.4 percent increase for the week after the British retailer released its annual results (see story above) and posted a 15.5 increase in pre-tax profit to an estimated $465 million. Hibbett Sports, which is searching for a new CEO and CFO, was one of the fastest-growing online retailers in 2018. Web sales rose nearly 176 percent last year for the retailer, according to a new report from digitalcommerce360.com. Camping World shares fell more than 5.5 percent on the last day of the period on a Bloomberg report that CEO Marcus Lemonis and an unnamed private equity firm were sued in Delaware April 12 for allegedly manipulating CWH’s share price when the Gander Outdoors parent went public in 2016. The case is under seal. Walmart is entering the subscription children’s apparel business via a partnership with Kidbox that will offer good, better, best assortments up to 6x annually. A roster of 120 designers are involved in the partnership, some new to the retailer.
Brands
Segment soars to ‘204’ Index with a nearly 1.8 percent aggregate gain for the week, exceeding the Dow’s 1.6 percent improvement. Twelve stocks, led by Acushnet Holdings and VF Corp., rise and three decline. Under Armour North American president Jason LaRose, named to the position in Oct. 2016, is leaving the Baltimore company on April 30. When Yeti’s 180-day IPO lockup-period expires tomorrow, pre-IPO shareholders will be allowed to sell up to 60 million currently-restricted shares. Nike, which has opened a men’s sneaker boutique in New York City with Nordstrom, is trying to trademark, ‘Footware.’ Volunteers for VFC-owned Timberland will begin various Earth Day efforts worldwide on April 22. More than 300+ Timberland corporate staffers in New Hampshire are slated to work at one of five projects on May 16 aimed at improving local trail networks and outdoor learning spaces for schoolchildren. Adidas has partnered with Donald Glover, aka Childish Gambino, to re-imagine three Originals styles—Lacombe, Nizza and Continental—that will be available worldwide on April 26. The Three Stripes has already released five “Donald Glover Presents” films on Youtube. Also, Adidas has named American Scott Dunlap as the new GM for its Runtastic business, replacing Runtastic co-founder Florian Gschwandtner.
