The Amazon Shivers

Chills jumped up the spines of grocers and purveyors of athletic footwear alike last week after reports the e-commerce behemoth would spend $13.7 billion to acquire Whole Foods and strike a direct selling relationship with Nike. The Street reacted strongly to both developments. The Nike news negatively impacted the stock prices of other industry retailers, including Dick’s, Hibbett Sports and Foot Locker. While some circles immediately suggested the response was overblown, others weighed in... Read more.

Numbers In Play
Week of 6/15-22
The Sports Insight Index is our opinion of what we think are the 28 most important public companies in the industry, 14 vendors and 14 retailers. Space considerations prevent us from tracking more, but we will make changes over time.
Index base of 100 is key to the closing prices of 12/31/14
Retail
Thanks to reports of a new Nike alliance with Amazon, the segment index dropped to its lowest mark in nearly two years with 13 stocks posting declines. Only Cabela’s, which could have its July 11 special shareholders’ meeting to approve the merger with Bass Pro Shops delayed due to lawsuits, was able to eke out a gain for the period. With the major banners taking hits to their stocks on the Swoosh-Amazon news, Camping World CEO Marcus Lemonis was preparing to surprise the winner of the new Gander Outdoors’ logo contest with a $100,000 check. Foot Locker, whose “brand agnostic” approach is likely to get tested with a Nike-Amazon alliance in place, has seen its shares fall more than 26 percent since its first quarter results were released. Finish Line, meanwhile, says it’s optimistic running trends will improve as 2017 progresses due to “retail launches” and its current pipeline of products.
Brands
Twelve stocks posted declines for the week with Skechers and Lululemon as the lone exceptions. But the segment’s weekly decline wasn’t as pronounced as Retail. LULU recently struck a strategic alliance with Canadian technical cycling brand 7mesh. Fitbit has inked a deal to have its logo emblazoned on the jerseys of the Minnesota Timberwolves starting this fall. The NBA Draft had the three major athletic brands signing young players as endorsers. Nike signed seven rookies, including top pick Markelle Fulz (76ers) and third pick overall Jayson Tatum (Celtics). Under Armour signed the fourth overall pick, Josh Jackson by the Suns, to a contract and could build a signature basketball line around him. Adidas, meanwhile, last week introduced a lifestyle collection around its main man in the NBA, James Harden, with the Harden LS in four color ways. Adidas also debuted the ADIZERO authentic NHL jersey that hits rinks this fall. Speaking of hockey, Adidas-owned CCM Hockey signed the top-pick in the NHL draft, Swiss center Nico Hischier (Devils) to an equipment contract. Bauer Hockey (not on the index) signed the NHL Draft’s second pick, Nolan Patrick (Flyers), to an endorsement contract. Meanwhile, Columbia Sportswear’s Sorel brand recently relocated to a new corporate headquarter in downtown Portland, Oregon.
